Frequently Asked Questions

What is a NIC code and why is it required?

NIC (National Industrial Classification) code is a 5-digit number used to classify business activities in India. It is required for MSME/Udyam registration, GST registration, Import Export Code (IEC), Shops & Establishment, and several other statutory filings.

Is NIC code the same as HSN or SAC code?

No. NIC codes classify the nature of your business activity (e.g., retail, manufacturing, IT services). HSN codes classify goods and SAC codes classify services for GST. NIC is needed for MSME, GST and IEC; HSN/SAC are needed for GST invoices and returns.

How many digits are in a NIC code?

NIC codes in this directory are 5 digits (India uses the NIC-2008 revision aligned with ISIC Rev. 4). The first 2 digits are the broad division, the next 2 are the group, and the final digit is the class.

Where do I enter the NIC code for MSME / Udyam registration?

On the Udyam portal (udyamregistration.gov.in), you enter NIC code(s) under "Major Activity" and "Additional Activity" when filling the registration form. You can add up to 5 NIC codes — pick the closest match for each distinct activity you perform.

Can I use more than one NIC code?

Yes. Most businesses perform more than one activity. Add up to 5 NIC codes on Udyam (1 main + 4 additional) and similar counts on other portals. Use this finder to confirm each code before submitting.

What if I cannot find an exact NIC code match for my activity?

Pick the closest available code — both Udyam and GST registrations accept the nearest match. There is no facility to add a custom code. If you cannot decide, send your activity description to our experts on WhatsApp and we will shortlist 2–3 candidates.

How often is the NIC code list updated?

The Ministry of Statistics (MoSPI) last revised the NIC code list in 2008 (aligned with ISIC Rev. 4). Updates are infrequent; this directory mirrors the latest MoSPI publication and is refreshed whenever a revision is notified.
