Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to common questions about 80c tax saver calculator.
What is the maximum 80C deduction?
Section 80C allows up to ₹1,50,000 deduction per financial year, aggregating investments in PPF, EPF, ELSS, NSC, LIC premium, home-loan principal repayment, tuition fees (only for full-time Indian courses), 5-year FDs with scheduled banks, and Sukanya Samriddhi deposits.
Is NPS eligible under Section 80CCD(1B)?
Yes — an additional ₹50,000 deduction under Section 80CCD(1B) is available over and above the 80C ceiling for contributions to NPS Tier-1 account. NPS Tier-1 is also permanent-retirement product, with an annuity purchase mandatory at age 60.
Can I claim home loan principal and interest together?
Yes — Section 80C deduction on principal (up to ₹1.5 lakh, part of overall 80C ceiling) and Section 24(b) interest deduction (up to ₹2 lakh for self-occupied, no cap for let-out) are independent for an existing home loan. Both apply from the year of possession.
What insurance premium qualifies for 80D?
Health insurance premium paid by any mode (cheque, cash, online) for self, spouse, dependent children and parents qualifies. Limits: ₹25,000 for self/family, additional ₹50,000 for parents (₹25,000 if below 60, ₹50,000 if senior citizens). Preventive health check-up up to ₹5,000 within overall limit.
What is the 80E deduction on education loan?
Section 80E allows full interest deduction on education loan taken for higher studies of self, spouse, children or legal ward. There is no upper limit. Deduction is available for the period beginning from the year the loan interest accrues and ending 8 years from the start of repayment or until interest ceases.
Is 80C available in the new tax regime?
Most 80C deductions are not available in the new (default) regime. Only Section 80CCD(1B) for NPS and Section 80CCD(2) for employer NPS contribution are allowed. For most salaried employees, the 87A rebate on income up to ₹12 lakh makes the new regime more attractive than itemised 80C deductions.
