Is IEC mandatory for all imports and exports?

IEC is mandatory for any person or business making import or export of goods from India. There are limited exceptions for individuals importing/exporting goods for personal use not connected to any business.

How long is IEC valid?

IEC is valid for the lifetime of the business entity — there is no expiry date. However, the IEC must be updated if there are changes in address, PAN, or bank details.

Can I have multiple IECs?

A person can have multiple IECs for different branch offices under the same PAN. However, each IEC must be linked to the same PAN.

What is the difference between IEC and Import Export Code?

There is no difference — IEC is the abbreviation for Import Export Code, also known as Importer Exporter Code.
