Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to common questions about advance tax calculator.
Who must pay advance tax?
Section 208 mandates advance tax from every assessee whose estimated tax liability for the year is ₹10,000 or more, after TDS credit. Senior citizens (60+) without business / capital-gains income are exempt per the first proviso to Section 208.
What are the advance-tax instalment dates and percentages?
For non-corporate, non-business income (capital gains / 44ADA), pay 100% by 15 March of the financial year. For business income, pay 15% by 15 June, 45% cumulative by 15 September, 75% cumulative by 15 December and 100% by 15 March of the following year.
What is Section 234B interest?
If advance tax paid is less than 90% of assessed tax, simple interest at 1% per month (part of month counted full) is charged on the shortfall, from 1 April of the assessment year to the date of actual payment (or date of determination under Section 143(1)/147) under Section 234B.
What is Section 234C interest for deferment?
Each instalment shortfall attracts interest under Section 234C — typically 1% per month for 3 months on the June shortfall, 1% per month for 3 months on September and December shortfalls, and 1% for 1 month on March shortfall. The advance tax calculator surfaces the cumulative 234C interest.
Is advance tax on capital gains mandatory?
Yes — Section 208 removes the capital-gains exclusion that existed for many years. Entire capital-gains tax due must be paid in the advance-tax instalment immediately following the date of accrual, failing which interest under Sections 234B and 234C is levied on the shortfall.
