Trademark Class
One of 45 categories under the Nice Classification used to group similar goods and services for trademark registration.
The Nice Classification (NCL), maintained by WIPO, has 45 classes: 1-34 cover goods (chemicals, paints, cosmetics, machines, vehicles, etc.) and 35-45 cover services (advertising, insurance, education, restaurants, etc.). India adopted the NCL in 2017 replacing the earlier schedule IV of the Trade Marks Act. Choosing the right class is critical — multi-class filing is allowed for businesses operating across classes.
Examples
An IT company providing software development registers its trademark in Class 9 (software) and Class 42 (software-as-a-service).
