Frequently Asked Questions
Who should register under MSME/Udyam?
Any business — proprietorship, partnership, LLP, or company — with investment in plant and machinery below ₹50 crore and turnover below ₹250 crore should register under MSME through the Udyam portal. Registration is free, instant, and unlocks priority-sector lending, CGTMSE collateral-free loans up to ₹5 crore, and government tender eligibility.
What is the difference between MSME and Udyam registration?
MSME is the umbrella classification; Udyam is the online portal (udyamregistration.gov.in) where registration is now done exclusively. The old EM-1/EM-2 certificates were replaced by Udyam registration from 2020. Micro, Small, and Medium enterprises are classified by investment in P&M and annual turnover.
Can I claim input tax credit with MSME registration?
MSME registration does not affect GST input tax credit — that depends on your GST registration. However, MSME-registered businesses get preferential access to government tenders, lower interest rates on business loans through CGTMSE, and priority sector lending status from banks.
What documents are needed for Udyam registration?
Only PAN and Aadhaar are required for Udyam registration. For proprietorship, PAN of the proprietor + Aadhaar is enough. For companies and LLPs, GST-linked data is auto-populated from the GST portal — no additional documents needed at the time of registration.
