Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to common questions about sip calculator.
How is SIP future value calculated?
Future Value = P × [((1 + r)^n - 1) / r] × (1 + r), where P is monthly SIP, r is monthly return (annual CAGR / 12 / 100) and n is total months. This formula assumes contributions at start of each month. Calculator applies the standard SIP future-value math.
Is 12% return realistic for equity SIP?
Long-term equity SIPs in India have delivered 11-14% CAGR over 10-year periods (Nifty 50 TRI, BSE Sensex TRI). Mid-cap and small-cap SIPs have delivered 16-20% but with higher volatility. 12% is a conservative assumption for long-horizon goals.
What is the right SIP amount for ₹1 crore retirement corpus?
Assuming 12% CAGR over 25 years, a monthly SIP of ~₹6,000 builds ~₹1 crore. With 10% CAGR, the required SIP rises to ~₹9,500. Calculator accepts any combination — adjust tenure and rate to identify the right SIP for your retirement corpus goal.
What is step-up SIP?
Step-up SIP allows annual increase in monthly contribution — e.g., starting ₹10,000 with 10% annual step-up builds a larger corpus than flat ₹10,000 over the same tenure. Most mutual fund platforms enable step-up SIPs at 5%, 10%, 15% annual increments.
Is SIP return taxable in India?
Equity SIP returns are taxed at 12.5% LTCG on gains above ₹1.25 lakh per financial year (post 23 July 2024) or 20% STCG if redeemed within 12 months. Debt-fund SIP returns are taxed at slab rate. Calculator does not auto-compute tax — use the post-tax return assumption.
Can I pause or stop a SIP?
Yes — most mutual fund platforms allow you to pause SIPs (1-12 months) or stop them. There is no penalty for stopping a SIP. Existing units continue to remain invested and earn returns. Calculator assumes continuous SIP; reduce the tenure to model pausing.
