Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to common questions about fd calculator.
How is FD maturity calculated?
Cumulative FD maturity = Principal × (1 + r / 4)^(4 × t), where r is annual rate (compounded quarterly) and t is years. Non-cumulative FD interest = Principal × r × t (simple interest) paid at the chosen frequency. Calculator applies both formulas.
What is the FD TDS rate?
TDS under Section 193A is 10% on FD interest exceeding ₹40,000 from banks and ₹5,000 from post office in a financial year. For NRIs, TDS is 30% under Section 195 unless DTAA rate applies. Senior citizens can submit Form 15H; others use Form 15G to claim nil TDS.
What is the senior citizen FD rate?
Senior citizens (60+) typically get a 0.5-0.75% higher FD rate than the regular card. PSU banks offer 7.5-8.5% for 1-5 year senior-citizen FDs; private banks offer 7.25-8.75%. Calculator applies the senior citizen premium if the input matches.
Is FD interest taxable?
Yes — FD interest is fully taxable at slab rate. Aggregate interest across all FDs is shown in your AIS / Form 26AS and matched with TDS certificates. The final tax outflow depends on your overall slab — calculator does not factor income-tax slab but does surface total interest for filing.
Are FDs covered by DICGC insurance?
Bank FDs (PSU + private + small finance + payment + regional rural banks) are insured by DICGC up to ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank. Company deposits (NCDs) and post-office FDs are not covered. Calculator covers all categories — pick the right one for accurate maturity.
What is a tax-saver FD?
Tax-saver FDs have a 5-year lock-in and qualify for Section 80C deduction up to ₹1.5 lakh annually. Interest is fully taxable at maturity with no TDS. Maximum deposit ₹1.5 lakh per financial year per bank. Calculator supports 5-year tenure and Section 80C tagging.
