Key takeaways
- MSMED Act 2020 uses a composite test — BOTH investment in P&M and turnover must be within the cap for each bracket.
- Micro: P&M ≤ ₹1cr AND turnover ≤ ₹5cr. Small: P&M ≤ ₹10cr AND turnover ≤ ₹50cr. Medium: P&M ≤ ₹50cr AND turnover ≤ ₹250cr.
- Services enterprises use the equipment-investment cap (₹50L Micro / ₹5cr Small / ₹25cr Medium) — not P&M.
- Udyam registration now mandates Aadhaar e-sign by the proprietor / partners / directors.
Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to common questions about msme / udyam registration eligibility.
What is the turnover + investment cap for MSME registration?
Micro: P&M ≤ ₹1cr AND turnover ≤ ₹5cr. Small: P&M ≤ ₹10cr AND turnover ≤ ₹50cr. Medium: P&M ≤ ₹50cr AND turnover ≤ ₹250cr. The composite test means BOTH caps must be within the bracket.
Are services enterprises eligible for MSME?
Yes — services use the equipment-investment cap instead of P&M. Micro: equipment ≤ ₹50L. Small: ≤ ₹5cr. Medium: ≤ ₹25cr. Turnover caps are the same as for manufacturing.
Is MSME registration mandatory?
No. MSME / Udyam registration is voluntary but unlocks priority-sector lending (PSL), CGTMSE collateral-free loans, lower interest rates on Mudra / PMEGP, and tender preference on government contracts.
Is Udyam the same as MSME?
Yes — Udyam is the new name (since July 2020) for the MSME registration process. The old Udyog Aadhaar / SSI registration has been replaced. The certificate is now called the "Udyam Registration Certificate" and is generated instantly on the portal.
Do I need a GSTIN to register on Udyam?
No. GSTIN is optional but auto-populates your turnover + sector details via the GST portal API. Without GSTIN, you enter the figures manually (PAN + bank account are required either way).
