Frequently asked questions
What is PAN and why is it required?
PAN is the 10-digit Permanent Account Number issued by the Income-tax department under Section 139A. It is mandatory for any person earning taxable income, opening bank accounts above ₹50,000, executing property transactions above ₹10 lakh, and filing Income-tax returns. PAN is used as the primary identifier for all financial transactions and TDS credit tracking.
Who needs a PAN?
Any person — individual, HUF, firm, company, LLP, trust, AOP, BOI or foreign national — required to file ITR or whose income exceeds the basic exemption limit must obtain a PAN. PAN is also mandatory for opening demat accounts, mutual fund folios and for TDS credit on salary, rent and professional fees.
How is PAN different from TAN?
PAN is the assessee / deductee identifier; TAN is the deductor identifier. Every deductor has both — PAN for the entity itself and TAN for TDS compliance. PAN is used in ITR, bank accounts and TDS credit statements; TAN is used in TDS returns, challans and certificates.
Is PAN mandatory for minors?
PAN is recommended for minors opening bank accounts, demat accounts or applying for scholarships. If the minor has taxable income (e.g., inherited assets, investment income), PAN is mandatory. Minor PANs use the guardian PAN representation on certain documents.
What is the fee for PAN application?
The NSDL / UTI processing fee for PAN application is ₹107 (Indian address) or ₹989 (foreign address), inclusive of GST. Our professional fee covers application drafting, KYC authentication, portal filing, follow-up and dispatch coordination. Total cost is fixed and quoted upfront.
How long does PAN application take?
Standard turnaround is 10-15 working days from filing of Form 49A on the NSDL portal. Most PANs are issued within 15 days. Delays occur if there is a name or Aadhaar mismatch, or if the IT department flags the application for manual review.
What happens if I do not have a PAN?
Without a PAN, you cannot file ITR, claim TDS credit, open certain bank accounts or execute high-value property transactions. Higher TDS deduction under Section 206AA applies — 20% instead of the standard rate — when TDS is deducted without a PAN. Penalties under Section 272BB may also apply.
Can PAN be applied without Aadhaar?
Aadhaar is mandatory for Indian citizens under Section 139AA for new PAN applications. Foreign nationals use Form 49AA instead of Form 49A and do not require Aadhaar. If Aadhaar is not yet allotted, the PAN application is filed with the Aadhaar enrolment ID and Aadhaar must be linked within 6 months.
